What defines modern kitchens

A modern design is built from flat, unframed slab doors set in long, uninterrupted runs. Detail is kept to a minimum, so the eye notices proportion, alignment and light instead. That is why we say modern kitchens live or die on precision. We template worktops after the cabinets are fitted and set every gap by hand, so the lines stay true from one end of the room to the other.

If you are searching for contemporary kitchens, this is usually the look you have in mind: clean surfaces, a calm palette and storage that keeps the clutter out of sight.

Our modern range is available in four finishes:

01Matt lacquer, for a smooth, soft-touch surface in a solid colour
02Super-matt laminate, for a flat, low-sheen face
03Textured woodgrain, which adds warmth to a slab door kitchen
04Glass, for a reflective, high-impact finish

Finishes can be combined. One of our modern kitchens in Shenfield pairs woodgrain with white and a tall bank of appliances, while a Billericay kitchen and diner uses graphite slab doors with Dekton worktops.

Modern kitchen designs tend to rely on a small number of materials used with confidence. A few combinations that work well:

Worktops come in quartz, granite, Dekton, solid timber and Corian. They are templated by laser after the cabinets are in and fitted by our own stone team. If you would rather have no visible handles at all, our handleless kitchens take the modern look one step further.

Layouts

Layouts a modern kitchen suits

The style suits open-plan extensions, new builds and apartments. Long single runs, galleys and L-shapes all work, and an island is often the centrepiece of a kitchen-diner. Islands can hold seating, storage, a sink or a hob, and we plan the electrics, extraction and floor loads before a single cabinet is ordered.

Lighting is where a modern kitchen comes to life. We plan layered lighting on separate circuits, task, ambient and feature, and our own electricians wire and certify it.
