Old Harwich. Inside the old town, many houses are tightly packed, centuries old and listed, close to landmarks such as the Electric Palace cinema and the Guildhall. Kitchens are often small, at the back of a narrow plot, with walls that are anything but straight. Cabinets have to be fitted, levelled and scribed to the room, which is work for time-served fitters rather than a flat-pack crew. Dovercourt. South-west of the old town, Dovercourt grew as a Victorian resort, with its beach, its iron lighthouses and streets of Victorian and Edwardian houses. These homes usually have a rear kitchen beside a separate dining room. Removing the wall between them, with a steel and building control sign-off where it is load-bearing, is a common way to create a family kitchen-diner.
