Kitchens in Maldon

Maldon has looked out over the Blackwater Estuary for more than a thousand years, and plenty of its houses have stories to match. Red-sailed barges still tie up at Hythe Quay, the High Street climbs past the Moot Hall and All Saints' Church with its triangular tower, and Promenade Park has drawn families to the waterfront since Victorian times.

When it comes to kitchens, Maldon homes are rarely simple boxes.

Kitchens: Maldon's maritime streets and their layouts

Grey shaker kitchen with island and dining area, Chelmsford

Around the High Street and down towards the quay, many houses are Georgian, Victorian or older, some of them timber framed. Kitchens in these homes were often added on at the back, so they can be long and narrow, step down a level, or sit under a sloping roof. Walls are rarely true, and floors are rarely flat.

In Heybridge and on the estates around the edge of town, the houses are newer, and the brief changes: a kitchen-diner opening onto the garden, a utility room, room for an island. An island can carry seating, storage, a sink or a hob, and we plan the electrics, extraction and floor loads before a single cabinet is ordered. These newer homes often suit our Handleless or Modern ranges, finished in matt lacquer, laminate, woodgrain or real wood veneer, with layered task, ambient and feature lighting on separate circuits. Where the room is awkward, a walk-in pantry, a boot room for wet sailing kit or a hidden door into the utility can be made to the millimetre by our own workshop.

Both kinds of home benefit from the same discipline. Your designer checks the services and structure during the first visit, and our own time-served fitters level and scribe every cabinet to the room, so tall furniture meets an old ceiling or a sloping floor without unsightly gaps. Flooring is laid before the cabinets so it runs under everything, and worktops are templated by laser only after the cabinets are in.

Styles

In-frame kitchen vs Shaker: which suits your house?

Dark kitchen with oak breakfast bar and pendant lighting

Owners of older homes often weigh up these two styles: Shaker suits period homes, and Traditional in-frame suits listed properties, farmhouses and detached family homes.

Shaker is a framed door with a recessed centre panel, painted in the colour you choose, in hand-painted or factory-painted timber. We call it the Essex favourite: timeless without being old-fashioned, and easy to live with for twenty years. It suits period homes, 1930s semis and family kitchens.

Traditional in-frame goes further. It is in-frame cabinetry with cock beading, mantels and dressers, built the way kitchens were before flat-pack, in hand-painted solid timber, natural oak or walnut. Substantial and quiet, it is made to be handed on, and it suits detached family homes, farmhouses and listed properties.

If neither feels right, our Modern, Handleless and Bespoke ranges cover everything from slab doors to curved islands and hidden doors.

Not sure which way to go? Our designers will visit, measure up and talk through what would work in your room. The design and quotation are free.
