Kitchens Basildon: Modern and Classic Kitchens, Supplied and Fitted

Basildon was designated a new town in 1949, and the original neighbourhoods are full of terraced houses and maisonettes laid out around footpaths and greens. Their kitchens are typically compact galleys, sometimes with a serving hatch or a small dining area next door. Taking out a non-structural wall, or opening a structural one with a steel, can turn two cramped rooms into one usable space. Where the footprint has to stay as it is, storage does most of the work: pull-out larders, corner solutions, drawer-in-drawer and pantries designed around what you actually own, so the worktop stays clear for cooking rather than for the toaster, the kettle and the post.

Laindon, older than the new town that grew around it, has a real mix of housing, from early twentieth-century homes to post-war estates. Up in Langdon Hills, the roads near the country park have many larger private homes with room for an island. Noak Bridge, built in the late 1970s and 1980s in a deliberately village style, has cottage-like houses where a painted Shaker or in-frame kitchen often feels more at home than a high-gloss one.
