Fitted kitchens, Colchester style: from Roman walls to Stanway
The old town
Colchester grew from Roman Camulodunum, and the town wall and the castle, built on the base of the Roman Temple of Claudius, still shape the centre. Around the Dutch Quarter and the streets inside the walls, you find timber-framed and Georgian houses, many of them listed. Rooms are rarely square, ceilings can be low, and walls move. That is where scribing matters: cabinets have to be fitted to the room as it is, not as a plan assumes it is.
Lexden
West of the centre, the period homes along Lexden Road have tall ceilings, generous rooms and original chimney breasts. They suit furniture with real presence, and a mantel over the range can make the chimney breast the focal point rather than an obstacle.
Stanway
On the western edge of town, Stanway's detached homes are mostly modern, with bigger kitchens and space for an island or a kitchen-diner. Owners here often want a cleaner look and better lighting than the original builder fitted.

Why an in-frame kitchen suits listed and period homes
Our Traditional range is built around in-frame cabinetry, with cock beading, mantels and dressers, made the way kitchens were before flat-pack. Finishes include hand-painted solid timber, natural oak and walnut, and the style suits detached family homes, farmhouses and listed properties. Our in-frame kitchen in Ingatestone combined a hand-painted finish, a mantel and a butler sink.
Whichever style you choose, every kitchen we build is designed from scratch for the room it goes in. If you prefer something lighter, our Shaker style uses a framed door with a recessed centre panel, painted in any colour you choose. For Stanway's newer houses, our Modern and Handleless ranges use matt lacquer, laminate, woodgrain or real wood veneer, and our Bespoke range covers awkward rooms with walk-in pantries, curved islands and hidden doors.

Installation
Kitchen fitters Colchester can rely on: how the work runs
It starts with an enquiry and a call back within one working day. Your designer then visits, measures the room and checks the services and structure before drawing anything.
Next comes the design, presented in 3D so you can walk through the room before anything is ordered, followed by a fixed, itemized quotation. Cabinetry, worktops, appliances and every trade appear on one document with one price.
On site, our own fitters and trades follow a written programme run by one project manager, and the site is left tidy every evening. Typical installations take two to four weeks. At the end we snag, clean and walk you through the kitchen, and our ten-year installation guarantee is handed over in writing.

What is an in-frame kitchen?
It is the style behind our Traditional range: in-frame cabinetry with cock beading, mantels and dressers, built the way kitchens were before flat-pack. We describe it as substantial, quiet and made to be handed on.
Do your fitters handle the plumbing and electrics?
Yes. Plumbing, waste and gas are moved by our own plumbers, and electrics are carried out by NAPIT Registered Electricians. You never have to find or pay a separate tradesperson.
