Kitchen Installation: Every Trade, in the Right Order

A new kitchen is a building project. Walls come down, floors come up, and electrics and plumbing move. Most kitchen suppliers hand you a list of trades to find yourself; we employ them. Every kitchen installation we carry out is run by one project manager, to a written programme, with our own fitters and trades on site. Typical installations take two to four weeks.

What happens on site, stage by stage

Floor tiles being laid across the room before the kitchen cabinets go in

The order matters. Doing things in the right sequence is what stops a finished floor being cut up or a new wall being chased out for a cable.

  • 01Strip-out. Careful removal of the existing kitchen, appliances, flooring and tiles, with licensed waste disposal.
  • 02Structural work. Where the design needs it, walls are removed, openings formed and steels installed, with engineer calculations and building control sign-off. On our Brentwood project, the steel went in over two days before any kitchen work started.
  • 03Services. New circuits, sockets, lighting, appliance connections and consumer unit upgrades by NAPIT Registered Electricians. Water, waste and gas are relocated to suit the design. For an island, services can run under the new floor so no channels are cut later.
  • 04Plastering. Walls and ceilings made good, boarded and skimmed ready for decoration.
  • 05Flooring. Porcelain tiles, engineered wood or LVT, laid before the cabinets so the floor runs under everything.
  • 06Cabinets. Kitchen fitting proper: units fitted, levelled and scribed to the room by our own time-served kitchen fitters.
  • 07Worktops. Laser templated once the cabinets are in, then installed by our worktop team. Compare materials on our kitchen worktops page.
  • 08Appliances. Supplied, installed and commissioned, with warranties registered on your behalf. See our kitchen appliances guide.
  • 09Decorating. Walls, ceilings and woodwork prepared and painted.
  • 10Snagging and handover. A final inspection with you, adjustments made, the room cleaned and your guarantee issued.

Our Brentwood handleless kitchen, which included removing a load-bearing wall, a full rewire and a new porcelain floor, took three weeks on site from start to finish.

We treat your home the way we would want ours treated. One project manager keeps you informed with daily updates, and the site is left tidy every evening. On our CM15 project, where both owners worked full time, keys were held securely and the daily updates came by WhatsApp.

Living without a kitchen for a few weeks

For two to four weeks, the kitchen is a building site. A little planning makes it much easier:

  • 01Set up a temporary kitchen in another room with a kettle, a microwave, a toaster and a fridge if you have a spare
  • 02Keep a box of plates, cutlery and mugs you can wash in a bathroom basin
  • 03Plan simple meals for the first week, when the room is stripped out and the services are being moved
  • 04Ask your project manager which days water or power will be off, using your written programme

"Everything was handled by Essex Home. The electrician, the plasterer and the tiler all turned up when we were told they would, and Dan managed it all. We never had to chase anyone."
